It’s got heart and soul and grit. The characters ring true, and I say this as someone who knows a lot about addiction. I couldn’t put it down and it stayed with me after I finished it. After the death of her long-term boyfriend, Ben, Cass feels set adrift. Her alcoholism had taken over her life, and it was no different at his funeral - that is, until she found out she was pregnant with Ben's baby. She quit drinking and needed help to take the next steps to get her life clean. Although she was reluctant to do so, she asks Ben's brother, Scott, for help. Scott is a third baseman for the Red Sox and quite the baseball player; his tolerance for Ben was limited, but surprisingly, he does not say no when Cass asks for help. She met & fell in love with Ben, another alcoholic, and they spiralled together, until Ben died of alcohol poisoning. When Cass discovered she was pregnant with Ben's baby after he died, she vowed to get clean for the sake of her baby. The only person she has to turn to is Ben's brother Scott, who is a third basemen for the Boston Red Sox. They make a tentative agreement.... he will allow her to live with him and he will finance her recovery, as long as she abides by a few rules. At times it seems Cass's demons will win out, but Cass is determined to be the best mom she can possibly be. ( Reviewed in the United States on September 21, 2021 )
