The opportunistic Jagers finally make themselves known. And all sorts of action, adventure, politics, love, war, and seamanship ensue. More excellent nautical fantasy from Abigail Hilton! The first half of the novel follows immediately on the events of THE GUILD OF THE COWRY CATCHERS, as Gerard, Silveo, Gwain, and their band of misfit pirates try to escape the aftermath of their war with the evil priestess Morchella. All they want to do is pay a brief visit to Gerard's family before making their way across the sea to the distant Sunkissed Isles, but they soon find out that the tiny kingdom of Holovarus needs their help. Perkins -- The Keystone : This wonderful book does many things well, but I would like to just mention one thing, that to me it feels like it contains the rest of the ending of The Guild of the Cowry Catchers. There were a lot of stories within that story, too, and the sub-story that ended at the end of that epic was not even the one I was most invested in by the end. The survivors had a lot to work out about how they were going to go on. And here, even though the war turns out to have not ended, just entered a new phase, we see them finding their places in their new lives and new relationships. And then the crew from the Albatross show up among the refugees. It's complicated, yet comes together in a satisfying way that still leaves plenty for the planned third Refugees book to explore. And since we’re being truthful, I kind of hoped this book would suck or at least be mediocre, because if Abbie wrote something that wasn’t that good, then maybe I could finally sleep at night instead of worrying that I had wasted my life and accomplished nothing or whatever is less than nothing with my time on this planet.
