  • 3.0 out of 5 stars from Don Kidwell -- "Go as far as you dare in the heart of a lonely land... : ...you cannot go so far that life and death are not before you." Short, poignant book with descriptive phrases about a region I sorely want to visit one day, but absent the wonderful illustrations by E Boyd Smith that helped bring this book to life. Happy enough to own this portable copy on my kindle tho can also be read online free of charge with illustrations included by doing a title search preceded by the word "archive". Good book and I did enjoy. ( Reviewed in the United States on April 30, 2017 )
  • 1.0 out of 5 stars from Sterling45 -- Yoda Wrote the Book : I couldn't get by the writing style. Felt like Yoda was writing the book. In addition, I live in the area about which the book is supposedly written and I recognized most of nothing she talked about. Very confusing and rambling. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Magnolia -- A love-poem to the deserts, mountains and people of the West : Neither of the boxes labeled "Predictable', "Some twists" and "Full of surprises" is applicable to this book. There is no plot, therefore no development. The book, written in the early 1900's, is a love poem of the deserts and mountains of the West--the "Land of Little Rain". It is a beautiful, poetic description of the land, flora, fauna, and people of the region in which Mrs. Austin lived and traveled. The places are fictitious, and probably the people, but this does not detract from the beauty of the descriptions, the love of the land she exudes, or the love and respect of the people she knew and met. A wonderful love-song to the land, animals, plants and people and to a time gone by. If you have ever visited such regions of the West, it will mean even more. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Alan Venable -- A gem of the American western desert from 1903 : If you love California history and natural history, particularly of dry places (of which Wright Morris wrote so beautifully, "where men [and women)begin to dream...") you will love this little gem. • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Xenia Tran -- Nature writing at its best. : The land of Ute, Paiute, Mojave and Shoshone is completely new to me and Mary Austin's beautiful and detailed observations of the plant- and wildlife in this wild expanse of desert and rock (first published in 1903) is one of the most enjoyable pieces of nature writing I have ever encountered. She takes you by the hand and shows you what is often hidden and extends a warm invitation to knock on her door 'where you shall have such news of the land, of its trails and what is astir in them, as one lover of it can give to another.' • 5.0 out of 5 stars from Gail -- Wonder : A wonderful book with insight into the early 1900s and the desert. The book is a photograph in words. I enjoyed this book and will most likely read it again . ( Reviewed in the United Kingdom on June 23, 2019 )
